General Game Discussion / Re: Fairness of the Auto-concede

Queue times aren't really an issue in League either, but the amount of cussing you get after the 3rd queue dodger in a row still says this kind of behavior is not looked upon kindly. While the queue times in IW certainly compound the problem, fixing them will not be a panacea.

Yea but if everyone's playing the type of deck you happen to hate, may be time to take a break anyway >.<

Actually I already mentioned earlier that the matchmaking system needs to be fixed that if a concede happens that the players not be matched up.

Imagine a person who does not want to play a game of chess with you. Now they sit there for 5 minutes staring at you while waiting for the clock to run out. You get some ip. Worth? wasting five minutes of your life was worth making someone and yourself sit and do nothing because you have to prevent him from leaving something he doesn't want to do?
If this was like league and was team based and had an significant expected gametime required to play one single match, then it would make some sense to have penalties to leavers. As it stands, it does not.

Once again Chess does not indirectly punish a player when his opponent concedes, whereas Infinity Wars does.

In League, even queue dodging is punished by an increasing time out. For those that don't know queue dodging is leaving a game that is still in the champion select stages, the game will abort and a new game is immediately formed with a replacement player, which means there's no time wasted with AFKs and in-game trolling. But the player who dodged is still slapped with a time out, starting at 5 minutes and then 15 then 30, etc. The idea is the the player has a legitimate reason to need to leave a game then he's fine and the penalty is negligible, but should he be going and leaving games habitually, the system makes it less and less rewarding for that player to cherry pick his matches.

We could implement a similar system in Infinity Wars. The first sub 5 minute concede you do in a given hour nets you a warning, then a 2 minute time out the next time, then 5 minutes, etc. An hour of games with no sub 5 minute concedes will reset the timer. This will allow people to concede the occasional match up for legitimate reasons without enabling them to trawl for games and only play those where the odds are in their favor.

Heart, if you're going to tell me we need to allow certain people the freedom to serial concede games looking for winnable match ups other wise it's no fun for them, then I will state this this bluntly: I don't care for those people. I think they are entitled and spoiled brats and I'd rather see them leave the game because those are the people who do not grow as players or care about the community as a whole. If they need to easy or fast wins to have fun they can go play bots. Instead, the guys who build robust decks who are willing to take on anyone and become better players because of it are the ones being forced out of the game.

ip and exp are only necessary as part of a barrier to entry , to the point where it doesn't matter anymore past a certain point. For example, I do not need to get more ip or exp to further anything else in the game anymore except for preorders.

Not every player past level 50 only needs IP for pre orders. I'd personally love to get some Coyles (I only have 1 sb Firestarter, nothing else), only time I get to play with a Sol it's because it's a weekly free deck, and as much puffy as I get for playing dirty control decks I own exactly 1 copy of The Calamity.

Imagine trying to grind IP for a Bishop, both Rooks, and a Queen, but people keep auto conceding because your opening move is Pawn to E4.

And while I agree that conceding should not be removed, it does need to be modified so that it is not something that can be casually or trivially done just because someone wants to avoid an unfavorable match up.

Except doing anything that would prevent auto concedes, like with punishments, only furthers to promote other ingame toxic behaviour, i.e stalling, afk, wasting time.
You can't begin to compare league to this, because, as you said it completely different in terms of who is playing.
Think about online chess, you can concede whenever. If there was something preventing this, people who didnt want to play would stall or waste time and so on and so forth.
People are going to have negative perceptions with literally just about anything. Some people get butthurt over people saying gg after a game.
The perception was probably different because the community was different, it was much smaller, the meta was relatively dynamic.

The problem with comparing this with online chess is that player's ability to improve or add strategies to their arsenal is not directly tied to their time spent in game. It's not like I'm going to buy a booster pack of pieces hoping to pull the rare pawn that lets me move backwards.

In fact, the other way to drastically reduce the butt hurt from auto-conceding is to remove EXP and IP from the the game and make all packs only purchasable with real money. Take away any incentive for players needing to actually finish a full game and suddenly it's not so bad if people concede early.

And that was my point with comparing the game with League; in an environment where advancement is strictly tied to time actually spent in game, the ability for one player to affect the advancement of other players cannot be taken lightly.

If we consider IP and EXP as resources necessary for the enjoyment of the game, then auto-conceding is a way to deny that resource for enjoyment to your opponents. Now assuming there was some form of prevention of auto-concedes; even if a player stalls, AFKs, etc, at least the opponent still receives the IP and EXP resources.

Not actually suggesting they do this, but what if the game had never included a way to concede games in the first place? Would we even be arguing that it needs to be put into the game?

Maybe it's because my MMR wasn't getting in the way of getting games back then, but I don't remember auto conceding being that big of an issue back in the day, until certain members of the community started posting threads encouraging people to auto concede to certain "toxic" decks, explicitly as a way to punish the players using them.

And I think that history has a lot to do with the negative perception of auto conceding held by a lot of players. Because while there is not punishment and only benefit to be gained by the player who concedes in a Normal game, the player who is being conceded to has absolutely zero control and only stands to be punished according to the whim of the conceder.

There's a reason why League of Legends will not allow surrenders before the 15 minute mark and has timeouts for queue dodging. And while I realize League, being a team based game, has policing mechanics which would not directly translate well into a one on one environment like Infinity Wars, having some element of control would sort out a lot of arguably bratty behavior.

Is it true that 90% of money spent on pre-orders goes towards feeding stretch goats?

Lies! It's only 88.2%.
