Title: [CDC] Type Change [CLOSED]
Post by: NatoPotato on October 10, 2016, 10:23:20 AM
Card Design Challenge – Type Change

I want to see your designs for a card that becomes a different type as part of some sort of transformation/transition.

The only existing card I can think of off the top of my head that does something like this is Weaponize, and that just turns an artifact into a textless, generic token.
I'd like to see some more interesting cards using this mechanic on themselves, not just turning a separate card into some token.

Just to clarify it's TYPE, not sub-type (human, beast, etc) or super-type (unique, unlimited), I'm talking Character, Artifact, Location, Ability, Mission. (using Ability or Mission would probably be more difficult but if you can make it work that's cool)

The change could be one-way or reversible, and while it may be practically identical mechanics wise I'm not really looking for a card that is used just to create another card, basically it should be a continuation of the same object/being/effect, just in a different form, more or less.

(Make sure you keep in mind that if it can transform into a character multiple times its stats will be reset each time, unless otherwise specified in your entry)

--- Card Design Challenge Rules ---
1) The Judge appoints a challenge, it can be anything, making new card, redesigning an old one or whatever you wish.
2) All that wish to participate submit their card design. Each participant may only submit one entry per challenge, you may however edit your post as many times as you wish till the deadline.
3) If you edit your post you should make an additional post in this thread informing of the edit to make sure that the updated version of the card will be judged. The post should contain the full updated card details as well as a brief summary of what changed from your original submission.
4) After an announced deadline the Judge decides a winner. The winner then becomes the Judge for the next round.
5) All entries submitted before the deadline are guaranteed feedback, either in this thread or in another detailed feedback thread.

A bit more complex method of copying something, but it's a decent repeatable removal. You can also reuse it to copy different things after using it to block or combat things by activating its ability. Comparable with Undead Corruption

using Ability or Mission would probably be more difficult but if you can make it work that's cool

Hm, now I have to make one of those ::).

Festering Infestation
Purity: 2 SoA
Cost: 2
Type: Unique Mission
Rarity: Rare

Your opponent may activate this card to exhaust target deployed character he controls. Festering Infestation becomes 25% more complete for every character exhausted that way. Once it reaches 100%, sacrifice Festering Infestation.

At the end of each turn, Festering Infestation gains an Infestation Level. Once it reaches Infestation Level 4, it transforms into a 14/10 Undead Infested Swarm with infect.

The main force of the sleepers might be gone, but there are still areas tainted by the virus. If left unattended, they might become the cradle of a new outbreak.

Infested Swarm
Purity: 2 SoA
Cost: 5
Morale: 6
Type: Character - Undead
Stats: 14/10
Rarity: Rare

Infect

An accumulation of bugs, small animals, plants, corpses and scrapped machines. In times of need even the virus is not picky.

Comment:
A slight twist on the mission cards. Instead of giving yourself a mission and gain a reward for your success, you give your opponent a mission and gain a reward for their failure.

Lorewise this represents tainted patches of virus left after the sleepers defeat, scattered around the different worlds that have been attacked. Small infected animals, infected plants, persons, machines or land. Not very dangerous as long as someone cleans up the mess, but leaving it unattended might be a bad idea.

I dont think the virus ever was very picky.

Sigil of the Wild Dragon
2p WP

Whenever a creature you control kills another creature, Sigil of the Wild Dragon becomes 10% more complete per cost of the opposing creature killed. When it becomes 100% or more complete, it transforms into Draco, The Untamed .

Draco, The Untamed.
2p WP
Epic
7 Cost
Unique Creature
Dragon
25/25
15 Morale

Flying, Unstoppable

When Draco, The Untamed is transformed from Sigil of the Wild Dragon, move all creatures your opponent controls to the defense zone and move Draco, the Untamed to the Assault zone. At the end of the turn, Draco, The Untamed transforms back into Sigil of the Wild Dragon and has 0% completion.

"If you can hear his roar, its already too late."

Edit 1: to be more IW friendly and not necessarily reflect "how MTG" would do it. Basically the idea is that you kill some creatures and get a nice beefy dragon that redirects an attack with initiative MID COMBAT letting you go all out with WP for some serious damage thus making "Go for the face" dangerous...For your opponent.

Edit 2: Changed completion conditions for the card to reflect total cost of kills rather than number of creatures killed. Additionally, changed Draco to allow for possible repetition of his ability by permitting him to both attack and transform BACK into a mission.

Not sure of IW rulings but for MTG things transforming dont trigger enter the battlefield (or enters play) effects so you might need to indicate a special "when it transforms" to make it work when it transforms.

I think the way this is phrased, it wouldn't work at all. Since the transformation is an activatable ability, you would not be able to move the character until the ability has resolved. So haste would do nothing for the character, and at the end of turn it will return to being a location.

It's the same like using awaken or raise dead on characters with haste, you don't really get to use them the turn you raise them from the grave since you can't move them around during planning phase. Maybe remove the haste and change the transform effect to sth like 'Hostile Terrain transforms into a character until end of turn and is moved to a battlefield zone of your choice.'

2 FD
Unique Character--Human
Rare
Cost: 3
Morale: 10
10/5

At the beginning of the resolution phase, Glorious Martyr moves to the front of whichever zone he is in (the front is the left).*
When Glorious Martyr dies, he transforms into the Mission "Honor the Martyr"

For the Dawn, for Aberion, and for Talich!

Honor the Martyr
2 FD
Mission
Rare
3
Whenever a character you control attacks, Honor the Martyr becomes 10% more complete. When Honor the Martyr becomes complete, characters you control gain +4/+0

For the Dawn, the Martyr, and for Talich!--Aberion

*I wanted to convey that he was locked to the front of whichever zone he's in, like he's always leading the charge. Locking him seemed like it would be buggy/hard to implement, so I tried to come up with an equivalent solution.

Very much inspired by the legend of El Cid, this fella will charge into battle and give you a boost if you honor his memory after his death. I wasn't sure what sort of bonus to give him, but "Warcry on a stick" seemed reasonable. I considered also reducing the affected characters' morale costs to show their zealotry but decided against it. The Martyr's morale is pretty hefty because I have a habit of balancing conservatively, but the condition of the mission he leaves behind is pretty simple for a FD player to fulfill (looking at you, Baldo). He's a 3-drop to fill out that portion of the FD curve (since other than Kali in command FD's 3-drops are pretty lacking) and to ensure that he's early enough that you can fulfill his mission.

Quite far from what you were asking for, but I've always wanted to have a location as a commander.
I also like the idea of a drone that serves GI as a mobile portal to send in more supplies during battle than a drone could carry by itself. It being destroyed could glitch the fabric of the universe itself and teleport the troops to other location entierly.
P.S. dope paint skills.
